5Steps to a
Use the Buying Guide to Find the Best Size for Your Home
- How It Works
An automatic standby generator works by monitoring utility voltage 24/7 and runs off of your home's existing LP or natural gas supply. When your electricity is interrupted, the generator detects the problem and goes to work.
The controller in the generator monitors incoming voltage through the automatic transfer switch (ATS). When utility power is interrupted, the controller signals the generator to start.
Within 15 seconds the standby system begins supplying electricity to the circuits you have chosen to be powered by your generator. The controller continues to monitor the utility line in order to be ready to transfer back to utility power when it returns.
- Auxiliary Power
Standby generators are designed to supply power to your home in the event of a power outage of your normal electrical service. They can safely power your home for as long as an outage lasts.
Standby generators should not, however, be used as a permanent source of powering your home. They do not replace your normal utility service. The generator fuel costs would be much more expensive than buying power from the utility company since their cost to produce electricity is divided among thousands of customers.
- Self Install?
As an option, manufacturers offer systems prepackaged and pre-wired with installation instructions. It may be tempting to attempt to install a generator yourself.
However, to ensure proper installation and functioning of your generator, as well as for safety reasons, to ensure adherence to all local, state and national electrical codes, and to avoid the risk of a voided manufacturer warranty, we strongly recommend you use a licensed installer like Ultimate Installations.
Simple maintenance is required for your generator. All generators require periodic oil and filter changes to ensure maximum performance for years of reliable service.
Preventative maintenance kits are available and Ultimate Installation offers annual maintenance contracts for a worry-free ownership experience.
- Greater Efficiency
GE Generators provide state-of-the-art power management. GE generators allows you to manage diverse power backup requirements with a smaller, smarter, and more energy-efficient system that's customized to your family's specific needs.
GE uses the proprietary Symphony computer-controlled transfer switch to automatically prioritize your household's energy requirements.
- Power Management
GE's proprietary Symphony Power Management System lets you tailor power usage to your specifications. The revolutionary Symphony system acts as a "traffic cop," directing power to the appliances that need it most. You set your priorities, and the system complies with a targeted energy output.
- Cost Effective
Targeted power output means big fuel savings. With GE's power management system you can get whole-house power protection without wasting fuel on low-priority appliances.
GE generator systems offer the best warranty protection in the industry. The length of the warranty will vary depending on the unit that is purchased.
Entry-level systems will carry a 4-year limited warranty; while more advanced systems carry a 5-year limited warranty.
Professional installation is required to maintain the GE warranty.
- Be Prepared
Tornadoes, ice storms, or just a transformer malfunction can leave you without lights, water, climate control, and home security for anywhere from a few hours to over a week.
In the event of a power outage, a permanent standby generator can kick in automatically, keeping your food refrigerated, your water pump running, and your home at a comfortable room temperature.
When power is restored your generator can reconnect your home to the grid without any manual intervention. So even when you're on vacation, your home and your investment are protected.
- Automatic Advantage
Why should you choose a standby over a portable generator? It's simple: automatic standby generator systems are safer, more efficient, and less expensive to run than portable generators. They provide protection and power 24/7. Automatic activation and shutoff ensure that your home will be protected even when you're away.
According to the American Red Cross, permanent standby generators are the best way to protect your family and your property in the event of natural or other disaster. With an automatic standby generator, you're never powerless.
- For Your Family
From climate control to food preparation, from homework to hygiene, your family counts on power. A standby generator will keep your family safe and comfortable through even the longest power outage.
- For Your Property
A lengthy power outage can be very expensive. Without a backup power source, you can lose all the food in your refrigerator and freezer. In the winter, your pipes can freeze and burst. A failed sump pump can lead to severe flooding damage.
And let's not forget the cost of staying in a motel, if a lack of running water and climate control makes your home uninhabitable. It pays to be prepared!
- For Your Peace of Mind
Imagine you're on a ski vacation with your family. An ice storm hits your hometown, causing widespread power outages. You'd like to enjoy your time on the slopes, but all you can think about is whether or not you're going to come home to burst pipes.
With a standby generator you can rest easy, knowing that you'll find your home just the way you left it.

- Correct Size
First, envision your home or business without power. Some outages may be short in duration, while others could last for days or weeks. What would you miss during an outage?
Often, generators are pre-packaged with a transfer switch containing a predetermined number of circuits based on the generator's kW power rating. Each circuit is directly connected to a matched circuit on the home's main circuit breaker panel, providing electricity to that specific appliance or area of the home.
For example, with an 8kW generator packed with a ten circuit transfer switch, you can connect (1) lights and TV in the family room, (2) microwave and lights in the kitchen, (3) refrigerator, (4) power to the bathroom, (5) computer and home office, (6) garage door opener, (7) air conditioner, and (8) furnace.
- Match Circuits
You can simplify the job of sizing a standby generator by matching the circuits between your home’s main electrical panel and the generator system’s load center. On the other hand, figuring out the specific wattage requirements of appliances and other items in your home can be difficult since they are plugged into outlets all over the house.
By identifying the circuits to back up you can easily decide how large a generator is needed and what model will best fit those needs. All the identified circuits will have backup power available.
